Installation Information

A non-profit organization based in Tucson AZ initiated a transformative project to address safety concerns at a four-way intersection in the downtown area. The initiative aimed to pre-enact the future intersection makeover that will be constructed at the end of the 3-year-long downtown improvement project. Due to the high number of fatal accidents occurring at the intersection, the project focused on improving pedestrian and cyclist safety by repurposing excess asphalt space. 

To achieve this goal, the organization used cost-effective, temporary materials such as concrete paint, flex posts, and TerraCast resin planters. Through these means, the once perilous intersection underwent a remarkable transformation into a pedestrian-friendly environment. The results were significant, with a notable increase in driver compliance. Adherence to stop signs increased from 69% to 82%, mitigating immediate safety risks and laying the groundwork for a more permanent intersection design.  

The success of this initiative offers valuable insights for enhancing other high-risk streets in the area, demonstrating the potential for impactful change without extensive financial investment. Although intended for only a year, the delays in the downtown improvement project allowed the plaza to remain in place for an additional year.
